Earlier this month at American Society of Hematology’s (ASH) Annual Conference in Atlanta, Patient Power’s Andrew Schorr caught up with SCCA’s Dr. Janis Abkowitz. In the video below, Dr. Abkowitz, who was recently inaugurated as President of ASH, discusses how oral therapy is changing cancer treatment. Instead of traditional intravenous chemotherapy, patients may just have to take a pill or two to manage their disease in a less toxic and more targeted way. The interview is a good bookend to Dr. John Pagel’s interview with Patient Power earlier this month.

Hi Dr. Abkowitz,
My name is Celeste Smith and my mom was your patient about ten years ago.
She suffered from Mylodesplasia (sp) and passed away in 2003. I am so grateful to you and SCCA for her wonderful care. I am a five year breast cancer survivor also treated at SCCA.
To think that maybe someday cancer could be treated with oral medication is an amazing breakthrough and hopefully this will become standard of care.
Thank you for your wonderful treatment of my mom, she was an extraordinary mother and much missed but she had years she would not have had without you.
