This week SCCA published our Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) for 2012. The assessment, mandated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA, aka “Obamacare”), requires hospital organizations to “identify and assess the health needs of the community served by the hospital facility”–in SCCA’s case, the state of Washington, and in particular the Puget Sound region.
What’s really eye-opening in the assessment is the impact of cancer in Washington State. SCCA’s CHNA reports that “cancer will likely strike 4 in 10 Washingtonians in their lifetimes.” Other facts include:
- In 2006, 24 percent of the deaths in Washington were due to cancer.
- Incidence rates for cancer in Pierce and Snohomish counties are above national and state averages.
Read the entire assessment for an in-depth look at the demographics of cancer incidence and death in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
